FALCON NEWS FROM THE COUNSELOR’S CORNER Amanda riley, counselor January 2012 Financial Aid Workshop Interested in finding money to pay for college expenses? Seniors and their parents should plan to attend the College Financial Aid Workshop on Thursday, February 9, at 6:00 p.m. in the Dora School Library. Cody Ary, Outreach Coordinator for MSU-West Plains will conduct a workshop that addresses how students can apply for state and federal aid. The focus of the evening will be how to correctly complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and to become aware of the various types of financial assistance available. The information provided will be helpful for all college-bound seniors considering a two or four year college or university, community college, or technical/trade school located anywhere in the United States. It’s finally FAFSA time! The quickest way to obtain federal student aid for college is to apply online using FAFSA on the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov beginning January 1. However, before you apply, you must acquire your personal identification number (PIN) at www.pin.ed.gov. FREE help is available! There are “HELP” buttons on every page of the online application, or you can click “LIVE HELP” to chat with a customer service representative. To contact by phone, call toll free, 1-800-433-3243. March 31st marks the deadline for federal aid distributed through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) applications. It is imperative that all seniors who wish to attend a college, university, technical or trade school in the fall of 2012 file the FAFSA on or before March 31st in order to be considered for financial assistance. What Happens After I Apply? After completing your FAFSA application, you should receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) in 1-3 days if you filed electronically, or 2-3 weeks if you filed a paper version. Upon receipt of your SAR, check immediately for your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as well as any mistakes or errors. If you find mistakes on your SAR, inform your prospective college(s) financial aid office. Be sure to make corrections as soon as possible. Your Student Aid Report (SAR) is the form that tells how much student aid a person is eligible to receive from the federal government and how much the government expects the family to pay. The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is the amount your family will be expected to pay based on your situation. It is found on page 1 of your SAR. If you do not receive your SAR within 3-4 weeks, call 1-800-4-FED-AID. Once your prospective colleges review your SAR and verify your eligibility, they will each construct an aid package and send an award letter. You do not need to accept all of the aid that is offered to you; accept only the aid you want. After completing your FAFSA application, you should receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) in 1-3 days.
