Most of this information is from a History of Dora, written by Bess Cropper for a book entitled "Pieces of the Past"  published by the Dora School Parent Teacher Organization.

The city of Dora is located in extreme north east Ozark County, near the convergence of the Ozark, Douglas and Ozark County lines.  The city of Dora was founded in the late 1870's after several settlers came to the area.  The name of "Dora" came from the daughter of Anton Fisher, who built the first store and opened the first post office in the town now known as Dora.
In the late 1990's few of the businesses that once thrived in Dora remain.  At one time Dora claimed a bank, a movie theater, on Oddfellows Lodge, a doctor's office, a drug store, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, a canning factory, and a plaining mill.  The primary focus of the community in recent years has been the school, with two local general stores surviving, a pizza parlor and several small home businesses.  The economy of the area is now dominated by agriculture, with the primary focus being on businesses related to lumber, beef and dairy production.
